2020 Russian population census mascot

The jury members of Census mascot design contest have chosen the winner. Now, information, print and advertising products of 2020 Census will be decorated with the ViPiN birdie by an architect and illustrator from Samara Maxim Ovchinnikov.

About 900 designs of the coming Census mascot from 74 regions of our country were submitted for participation in the contest. According to the voting results of Internet users, ViPiN was included in the shortlist of finalists. The final decision was made by the contest jury, comprising representatives of Rosstat, the Publishing House Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper, the National Research University Higher School of Economics and experts in visual solutions.

“We noted the fact that among all the works, images of birds were the absolute majority: owls, pigeons, sparrows and even a firebird. The bird is a symbol of lightness, speed and aspiration for the future. We are sure that the smart birdie ViPiN most accurately reflects the new approach to the census and will become a logical continuation of the corporate style of 2020 Census”, said Pavel Smelov, Chairman of the contest jury, Deputy Head of Rosstat.

Media office of 2020 Census additionally marked 10 designs from Moscow and the Moscow region, St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, the Sverdlovsk and Penza regions and the Republic of Tatarstan. Some of them are just symbols of the Russian population census, while others reflect the support of the project by volunteers and the innovative digital character of the census. Also, the leaders of the audience voting were Yaroslav the Tiger and the expressive work “Konek-ogonek” (the little horse).

The authors of all 77 shortlisted designs will receive personal certificates of finalists of the 2020 Census mascot contest, and creators of characters marked by the Media Office will receive memorable gifts.

Congratulations to Maxim on his victory! We thank the finalists and participants for their bright and professional work and wish them much success, new achievements and all the best.
